What is Unsecured Debt?

Unsecured debt is a debt that does not have specific property used as collateral for the debt. A car loan or a house loan would not be considered unsecured debt since the creditor could take the car or house if the loan is defaulted.

Credit Cards, bank-issued loans, open or closed store credit accounts, collections, pay day loans, and debt being represented by a third party collection agency.

Credit card settlement is a type of debt settlement where the focus is on negotiating with credit card companies to accept a reduction in the total amount of credit card debt owed to them.

How long will it take me to pay off my debt using a consumer credit counseling service?

Everyone’s length of time with the program depends on their own unique situation. There are several factors that must be considered. Two of these factors are the creditor and the debtor (you).

It depends on how much debt you have and how much you are able to pay back each billing period AND whether the creditor will accept the terms under which you can pay back your debt. Typically consumer credit counseling services take about 4-5 years to complete their program when paying off unsecured debt.

Can I still get a mortgage while I’m in a debt management program?

While in a debt relief program, it may be difficult to get a mortgage.
